Users can now build it with the specific version of USD needed for their production pipeline and customize the import and export processes.
Autodesk
Originally launched in 2022, USD for 3ds Max was a huge step in making Autodesk software compatible with USD-based pipelines, providing support for managing USD data and allowing users to load USD stages directly in the viewport for editing. Now, USD for 3ds Max is the latest USD-related tool that Autodesk has open-sourced, with the source code available on GitHub.
USD for 3ds Max allows you to create, edit, work with, and collaborate on USD data, facilitating seamless integration between products like Maya and 3ds Max. While not designed to replace XRef, the USD features provide a modern, cross-DCC referencing pipeline that can enhance and, in many cases, replace existing referencing setups. The plug-in also comes with a complete API that allows extending the default import and export process and manipulating USD data directly via C++ and Python.
By releasing the source code, Autodesk allows users to build the plug-in with the specific version of USD required in their pipeline. This offers the flexibility to refine workflows and customize the default import and export processes, aligning with the company's goals to accelerate open-source adoption and interoperability across the industry.
