Valve's SteamOS Will Support Asus ROG Ally Handheld

The company reportedly aims to let other companies use SteamOS on their devices.

Valve's Linux-based SteamOS intends to support rival handheld devices, such as Asus ROG Ally. According to the recent patch notes, the OS update features support for extra ROG Ally keys. As specified in the notes, the update includes new features that are still being tested.

Back in 2022, Valve's Designer, Lawrence Yang, shared that the company intended to let other companies use SteamOS on their devices. "Once it's widely available, not only are we excited to see other manufacturers making their own handheld PC gaming devices, we're excited to see people make their own SteamOS machines, which could include small PCs that they put next to their TV," said the designer.

Now, Valve distinctly claims that it will provide support for Asus ROG Ally, which was considered to be a major competitor to Valve's Steam Deck. Lawrence Yang reportedly said that this patch note is related to third-party device support for SteamOS. Also, the designer stated that the team continues to work on adding support for additional handhelds on SteamOS. However, the work is still in progress, and bringing SteamOS to rival handhelds will not happen in the near future. According to Yang, Valve "isn't ready to run out of the box yet."
