Nick Reynolds returns with the next set of tips for environment artists: fake reflections, no in-game lighting, 2 textures for entire environment. Don’t forget to check out his Gumroad page for more stuff.
This weeks tip is 3 tricks I’ve used repeatedly in the past on lower end games like Wii and mobile. These tricks will continue to work for artists that have limited resources but still want to achieve the best look they can for the limited hardware they are creating content for. The 3 tricks covered are fake reflections, inability to have in-game lighting and 2 textures to create an entire environment.

Nick actually has a whole series of tips. He releases a new video every Tuesday, addressing some particular issue in the 3d workflow and providing his solution. The videos are very varied, covering a bunch of topics: from PBR to photoscans and scattering. We’ve worked with Nick to present some of his tutorials as videos on 80.lv. You will be able to download all related files (including the videos) over at his Gumroad. It’s completely free.
