Video Game Workers Union Calls Authorities to Examine the EA Buyout Deal

United Videogame Workers-CWA published a statement criticizing Electronic Arts' recent acquisition.

United Videogame Workers-CWA, the organization representing the interests of video game workers across the US and Canada, issued a statement regarding the $55 billion buyout of Electronic Arts.

The Union expressed concerns that the deal might influence the position of EA's employees and result in layoffs and closures of EA's studios. At the same time, the organization points out that the workers were not represented when discussing the deal: "Yet we, the very people who will be jeopardized as a result of this deal, were not represented at all when this buyout was negotiated or discussed."

The organization also notes that the deal will result in the company having to finance nearly $20 billion in debt, and it leaves the question of what measures the executives will take to address the issue. "If jobs are lost or studios are closed due to this deal, that would be a choice, not a necessity," reads the statement.

The Union calls on the governmental officials to pay attention to the buyout and examine its conditions: "We are calling on regulators and elected officials to scrutinize this deal and ensure that any path forward protects jobs, preserves creative freedom, and keeps decision-making accountable to the workers who make EA successful."
