Walmart Introduces AI-Powered Try-On Technology

Customers can now better visualize clothing.

Walmart introduces AI-powered virtual try-on technology that allows shoppers to better visualize clothing on models with the same body types. The tech called "Be Your Own Model" allows customers to use their own photo to better visualize how clothing will look on them.

Walmart promises an ultra-realistic simulation with shadows and fabric draping, where clothing falls on the figure in seconds, as opposed to some other apps that just lay a photo of an item on top of another image.

“Where we didn’t feel like customers were satisfied is that a lot of the AR experiences are basically the equivalent of taking and laying a flat image on top of a flat image,” said Cheryl Ainoa, Walmart SVP of New Businesses and Emerging Tech. “That doesn’t let you actually experience what this article of clothing is going to look like on me.”

The feature is now available on more than 270,000 items across Walmart’s portfolio of brands. Be Your Own Model will be first available to iOS users of the Walmart app and then desktop and web, with Android support following in the coming weeks.

The company believes launching this next iteration of virtual try-on technology makes online shopping an inclusive, engaging, and personalized experience that better replicates in-store shopping.

Earlier, Walmart launched a similar technology called Choose My Model, where shoppers could choose from a variety of models between 5’2” – 6’0” in height and sizes XS – XXXL to try the clothes on. The appearance and development of the smart tech are connected to the company's acquisition and implementation of the Zeekit virtual try-on platform.

It must be said the idea to try on clothes online is not novel, it has already been introduced in BODS – a platform that helps you create your own personalized avatar and try clothes on to see if they fit.
