Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy's Detective System Doesn't Care About Innocence

"The correct answer is whichever one you choose as an Acolyte of the Inquisition."

It looks like fans of Owlcat Games' CRPGs are in for a lot of fun. Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy is an upcoming grimdark, party-based CRPG that takes a different approach from Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader: instead of taking on the role of a scion of an ancient dynasty of privateers, you play as an Acolyte working in the shadows for an Inquisitor. This time, the focus is on investigations rather than military campaigns, trade, or building an empire. And judging by the latest reveal, this side of the game is looking pretty promising.

The detective system is less about simply finding the truth and more about finding the truth you want. In the recent interview with PC Gamer, Senior Narrative Designer Veronika Larionova shared more details, explaining that you'll have access to a detective journal where you can gather, sort, and store evidence, and you'll also have a special Servo-Ossuarium device capable of "tracking suspicious trails, intercepting signals, and running various kinds of data analysis". Your companions are always ready to share their opinions, but none of them can solve a mystery on their own.

Larionova was also asked whether players can choose to end an investigation whenever they want. In short, everything is really up to you:

"Absolutely, yes. You are an agent of the Golden Throne, an Acolyte of the Inquisition, and your word is undeniable truth. You can accuse any suspect in a case the moment you log evidence against them in your inquisitorial journal. Even if all you have is the feeling that they're breathing a little oddly.

That said, if you keep digging into the investigation, you'll also find that new evidence or conclusions can reshape the wording of the accusation, adding more detail and proof. Or, conversely, turn up evidence clearing the suspect. What you do with that information is entirely up to you.

The fact that your verdict is treated as truth doesn't mean uncovering the actual truth is unimportant (though it isn't mandatory). It simply means that the power to use that truth as you see fit rests in your hands."

Will there be any consequences if you get it wrong? "The correct answer is whichever one you choose as an Acolyte of the Inquisition", Larionova said. In true RPG fashion, different choices can open up specific story branches, some may earn you rewards, change how NPCs feel about you, or even affect the ending.

You can read the full interview here to find out whether you can actually roleplay as Inquisitor Eisenhorn. No release date has been announced yet, but you can catch up on the latest information about Dark Heresy with the recent companion reveals. Epione has medical knowledge, Haymar knows everything about survival, Laarthyr can offer useful insights into xenos behavior, and so on:
