Check out Mirza Beig's latest experiment and try the web demo.
Lately, Mirza Beig has been investigating the physics of portals, aiming to implement them as an interactive mechanic in his game demo. In the latest update, he put his own spin on the so-called "Portal Dilemma", a thought experiment that appears to originate from Valve's Portal.
The question is: In a world where portals exist, what happens if you press a moving portal down over a rigidbody/cube, connected to a non-moving portal on the wall? A: The cube comes out of the stationary portal and simply drops due to gravity, or B: it shoots out with force?
"Scenario: A 'hydraulic' press with a portal on its surface descends over a stationary cube below it. The vertically descending portal is linked seamlessly to another static portal (example, on the wall to the side). By the time the portal from above exactly finishes slamming down over the cube, what is the state of the cube?", commented Mirza.
This question sparked some fascinating discussions, with many people sharing how they think, reason, and approach abstract problems. Mirza shared his own perspective, which you can read below and explore further on his X/Twitter page. You can also try out the playable portal web demo by clicking this link.
