Winamp Teams with Deezer to Power Next-Gen Music Player

Deezer's streaming tech and catalogue will drive Winamp's new subscription service, coming in 2027.

Winamp has announced a new strategic collaboration with Deezer, which will power a premium music subscription service built into the next generation of the Winamp Player.

Deezer will supply its white-label streaming technology and global music catalogue. The offering will be fully built into the upcoming Winamp Player, expected to launch in the first half of 2027.

The new Winamp Player also aims to bring together premium streaming, users' local libraries, internet radio, podcasts, and personal cloud collections, alongside a customizable interface and new social and discovery features, which is overall described as a distinctly different subscription experience. The update will also reach Winamp's existing user base: its classic Winamp desktop player, still used by more than 40 million people worldwide, will gain access to the new Deezer-powered subscription service once the platform launches.

Winamp Group CEO Alexandre Saboundjian said the company has always aimed to give users freedom in their experience:

"Winamp has always been about giving users the freedom to experience music their own way. Twenty-five years ago we changed the way people listened to digital music, and we believe the time has come to challenge the listening experience once again."

He added that the Deezer partnership gives Winamp access to strong streaming technology and a broad music catalogue, allowing the company to focus on building a unified listening product.

Winamp's Chief Business Officer, Thierry Ascarez, noted that the deal is more than a simple technology licensing arrangement:

"This partnership is much more than a technology agreement. It represents the coming together of two companies that share a passion for innovation in music. Deezer provides the streaming infrastructure; Winamp is creating a completely new product experience. Users won't simply discover another streaming service – they will discover a new generation of the Winamp Player."

Deezer's Chief Commercial Officer, Julien Delbourg, said the company sees the partnership as a chance to help shape the next chapter of a well-known brand:

"Much like Deezer, Winamp was part of building the foundation for the future, as the music ecosystem entered a new era through digital transformation, and we're looking forward to contributing to the next phase of this iconic brand."

Winamp says more details will follow closer to launch.

Recently, YouTube partnered with NBCUniversal to bring Peacock content directly into YouTube Premium subscriptions.
