The modder took the files from the recently-released Portal RTX.
Back in September 2022, NVIDIA unveiled RTX Remix, a modding platform to create RTX remasters of classic games that would allow modders to easily capture game assets, automatically enhance materials with powerful AI tools, and quickly enable RTX with ray tracing and DLSS. While the platform itself hasn't been released yet, Portal RTX, a remaster of Valve's legendary first-person puzzle platform powered by RTX Remix, went live on December 8, 2022, allowing modders to get access to the Remix's files before the tool's official release.
One particular modder, known as Night Doctor on Reddit, has recently demonstrated how Remix's files, available via Portal RTX, can be used to improve the visuals in a game by presenting a marvelous ray-traced version of Stormwind from Blizzard's World of Warcraft Classic. In a lengthy demo shared by Night Doctor, the modder showcased the city's interior and exterior locations and demonstrated the ray-traced versions of some of the in-game objects. You can watch the full demo attached above or by checking out the modder's original Reddit post.
