Jack Dorsey is testing his invention.
What if talking to your friends and family didn't need an internet connection? Such a future might soon become a widespread reality thanks to Block CEO and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, who launched the beta version of bitchat, a decentralized messaging application that operates over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks.
"It provides ephemeral, encrypted communication without relying on internet infrastructure, making it resilient to network outages and censorship."
"bitchat implements a custom mesh networking protocol over BLE, where each device acts as both a central (client) and peripheral (server), enabling multi-hop message delivery."
It doesn't need infrastructure, central servers, and phone numbers. Local clusters are formed based on the physical proximity of around 30 meters.
Dorsey also wants to introduce messaging through WiFi in the future.
This system promises safe messaging without the risk of a big owner corporation seeing and sharing your data. If you want to see how it's developed, follow the creator on X/Twitter and read the paper here.
