You Can Wear This New Phone From Motorola Around Your Wrist

Lenovo Tech World 2023 brings back bendable phone concepts.

Who needs a watch when you can have a whole phone around your wrist? At least that's what Motorola has been thinking all these years since it unveiled the concept of a bendable phone back in 2016.

Making devices more flexible is not a new idea and it does remain impressive, although I doubt there's anyone who'd actually walk around with their phone hanging there on their arm. Still, the images Motorola presented at Lenovo Tech World 2023 did make me want to test the device.

The smartphone, presented by Lexi Valasek with the Motorola Innovation Research team, has a flexible OLED display that you can bend backward and use as a stand or a clock, for example.

As noticed by The Verge, Valasek snapped the phone onto some kind of metal band that looked like a watch, so chances are the device has a magnet on the back to make sure it doesn't fall off when you walk.

I wasn't there when Motorola showed off its 2016 concept, but The Verge says there was an audible crunching noise when the phone was put around vlogger Meghan McCarthy's wrist, which didn't happen in 2023, so that's a relief. The company did work on its design evidently.

Valasek also showed the phone's interesting AI feature, which allows you to take a photo of, let's say, your outfit, and it will create a wallpaper based on the pattern so your phone can match your style.

This presentation made me want to try it out, the idea of a flexible phone is appealing to me. However, I doubt we'll see this "as advertised" comfortable experience in reality any time soon.
