30 outstanding independent titles will fight for the grand prize of this year’s Independent Games Festival.
The Independent Games Festival (IGF) now has a list of finalists for its 19th annual awards. The ceremony will take place on March 1, 2017 during the GDC and will be hosted by Nina Freeman, the game designer behind a well-known title called Cibele.
More than 650 entries battled for the prestigious awards of IGF. Now there are only 30 different titles with some of them fighting for victory in multiple categories, like Virginia battling in four nominations (Best Audio, Excellence in Narrative, Excellence in Visual Art and The Nuovo Award for innovation). Hyper Light Drifter by Heart Machine, Inside by Playdead and Event[0] will all fight for three different categories.
Winners will receive over $50,000 of prizes in various categories with Seumas McNally Grand Prize worth of $30,000.

Following the announcement, Retronator Magazine has shared an amazing breakdown of pixel art from the games that will fight for this year’s prizes.
The visual styles chosen to illustrate indie games are as diverse as gameplay, from lovely hand-drawn art to low-poly 3D, from abstract shapes to colorful renditions with lush detail. Pixel art represents only a tiny fraction of games featured in the IGF, but they are nonetheless strongly represented among the winners.

You can find a breathtaking rich gallery of still and animated images along with a brief history of past IGF and cool profiles of independent titles like Bamboo Heart, Hyper Light Drifter, Kingdom: New Lands, Dropsy, Replica, and The Lion’s Son that are up for recognition this year.
The competition is diverse as always. Most of the games can hardly be sufficiently summarized with a genre label. They range from a cyberpunk hacking heist (Quadrilatelal Cowboy) to developing a relationship with a lonely spaceship computer (Event[0]). Be it a cooking puzzler (Overcooked) or a mysterious action adventure (INSIDE), you can be sure that any of the Grand Prize finalists—and any IGF nominee in general—is in one way or another breathing new soul into what we call video games.
