A Fallout Project "We're All Wanting" is Reportedly in Development
You're thinking what I'm thinking?
Jordan Middler, a journalist at VGC, has casually dropped what might be one of the biggest reveals about the Fallout universe in years, stating during Skill Up's Friends Per Second podcast that several Fallout games are currently in development at Bethesda and – based on a major hint he shared – possibly at Obsidian as well.
While discussing Fallout 5 and why he believes Todd Howard won't be directing the next mainline Fallout game, Middler stated that multiple Fallout projects are currently in development at Microsoft, and while no exact number was given, the wording of his statement suggests there are at least more than one.
That, however, wasn't the main reveal, as Howard himself had hinted at several Fallout titles being in early development as far back as 2024 during his interview with Kinda Funny Games. What makes Middler's statement noteworthy is that, according to him, one of those unannounced projects will be the one "we're all wanting," and if you are a longtime fan of the franchise, it wouldn't take long for you to realize that no potential game fits that description better than a prequel, sequel, or spin-off of Fallout: New Vegas, arguably the most beloved installment among the old-school Fallout community.
Bethesda
It's worth noting that talks about Fallout: New Vegas 2 being something more than a pipe dream have been going around for years, ever since both Bethesda and Obsidian were acquired by Microsoft, effectively rendering any bad blood the two developers may have had – and likely did have, given Bethesda's past rejection of Obsidian's Fallout proposals – totally irrelevant.
Still, new rumors and reveals on the topic have been few and far between, with the last major ones surfacing in 2023, when the community noticed several Steam update depots labeled "newvegas2" for Fallout 4, and in 2022, when Jeff Grubb reported that Obsidian was allegedly in talks with Microsoft about a potential New Vegas sequel.
One small hair in a soup shared by Middler is that no matter what those Fallout projects might be, they're still in their earliest stages of development and are ages away from even being announced, let alone released.
Also, not to kill anyone's vibe, but keep in mind that New Vegas is almost old enough to drive, hitting its fifteenth birthday in 2025. A lot has changed since its 2010 launch, including the Bethesda and Obsidian teams, whose glory days seem behind them, judging by the quality of their recent games. Maybe the game "we're all wanting" is actually in development, and maybe it will even be released someday, but with the latest titles from the duo being Starfield and Avowed, it's worth asking yourself: "Is Fallout: New Vegas 2 from the modern Bethesda and Obsidian really what I want?" Food for thought.
