A Japanese Scientist Invents a TV that Transmits Flavors

You need to lick the screen to taste the flavors.

We have all been waiting for a moment when TVs are able to transmit smells, creating never-before-seen levels of immersion. A Japanese professor from Meiji University Homei Miyashita has brought this concept one step closer to reality by creating a TV that can transmit flavors. According to Miyashita, he built the prototype himself over the past year.

The prototype named TTTV (an acronym that stands for Taste the TV) uses a carousel of 10 flavor canisters that combined with one another create the taste of various dishes. The flavor sample then rolls on hygienic film over a flat TV screen for the viewer to try. All one needs to do is to then lick the screen and enjoy the taste.

"The goal is to make it possible for people to have the experience of something like eating at a restaurant on the other side of the world, even while staying at home," comments Miyashita.

According to the professor, a mass-produced version would cost around $900 apiece. He hopes to make a platform where tastes from around the world can be downloaded and enjoyed by users, much like music is now.
