A Look at Dense Grass Performance in UE5.1 With Nanite

Environment Artist Nikjas Adam has learned something remarkable about Nanite in Unreal Engine 5.1.

Environment Artist Nikjas Adam has learned that Nanite works with Masked and Two-Sided Materials and with Pivot Painter Wind in Unreal Engine 5.1. What this means is that UE5.1 easily supports dense grass with nearly half a million instances. According to the artist, the scene demonstrated above features 483.000 instances of grass.

"The default RHI of UE 5.1 is DirectX 12. It also works well with the Quixel Trees because they are mid poly," comments the artist. "I found out that Nanite is still not good at rendering High Poly Trees because the more cards a tree has, the smaller they are and the geometry gets called quickly with distance."

This article is completely incorrect. This video is 8 months old and is running on UE 5.0 not 5.1, 5.1(that just released about a month or 2 ago) supports foliage now and has big improvements to Lumen and how Lumen interacts with foliage, as well as improvements to Lumen in general and supports much better reflections on hard surfaces and water, etc. Just an FYI for anyone reading this article, this grass could run much smoother now if the person re-did the video and on a decent graphics card...
