NVIDIA released a tribute video for the original Half-Life 2 and shared a sneak peek at the upcoming reworked game.
Ahead of the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2, which will be on November 16, NVIDIA released a tribute video and shared a sneak peek at its RTX remaster.
In the video, the project's developers share their impressions of the original Half-Life 2, pointing out that this game combines both shooting and combat with a story and characters' emotions. They noted that facial animation and the characters' expressions were "the best of its era."
Project Lead Wormslayer shared: "We just wanted to recapture that sense of awe that we all had 20 years ago playing it for the first time." The devs also said that they didn't want to make an entirely different game but rather update it to the modern day and bypass the limitations of the original engine. RTX Remix, a robust modding platform, is at the core of the remastering process. The developers add PRB material, fully ray-traced reflections and refractions on water and glass, volumetric fog, and full 3D details.
Half-Life 2 RTX Remaster was announced in 2023. The project's developers previously worked on Half-Life 2: VR, Half-Life 2: Remade Assets, Project 17, and Raising the Bar: Redux.
In August, NVIDIA showcased a new trailer, which includes fierce combat footage in the prison area Nova Prospekt:
Half-Life developer Valve seems to be preparing a present for the fans to celebrate the game's anniversary. It added a new branch to the Steam game called "test" and has been actively updating it.
As for the Half-Life 3, there have been multiple rumors and speculations. YouTube blogger Tyler McVicker stated that Valve's HLX would be the third major game that you play as Gordon Freeman, even if it wouldn't be called Half-Life 3.
