A Practical Guide To Applying Physically Based Lighting In Unreal Engine 5
Arthur Tasquin released a new, extensive YouTube tutorial.
In case you missed it
Previous Chapter
After conducting a series of studies and publishing an in-depth research article on the science of lighting, Arthur Tasquin developed PBL Database, a tool designed to help artists understand and apply the physically based lighting workflow in Unreal Engine 5.
Last year, he launched a tutorial series aimed at making the PBL workflow easier to learn. It has been some time since the previous video, and this new chapter takes a more practical approach, focusing on how PBL works in real production scenarios, where it performs well and where the engine's limitations become more apparent.
We asked Arthur to share a short message on the launch of this long-awaited continuation of the tutorial series:
"In this episode, I explore how PBL theory translates into practical workflows inside Unreal Engine. I walk through how I personally apply these principles in my own projects.
My goal with this tutorial was to give you the tools and understanding needed to try this on your own work. Through four different lighting studies, I break down specific techniques and explore Unreal Engine's limitations when it comes to physical accuracy.
To celebrate the release, I've also put the PBL Database on sale. If you've been considering it, now might be the perfect time to give it a try!"
Some artists previously featured in our interviews have noted how Arthur's approach has helped them improve their work, so this is your chance to purchase PBL Database if you're interested in physically based lighting. This plug-in won't create lighting for you, but it provides the tools to help you build it in the most physically accurate way possible and also offers an opportunity to study how light behaves in the real world:
