According to YouTube, Independant Animators Are Changing the Industry
Indie animators and fans are making the industry more accessible.
Now it is more common to watch shows and movies on different platforms, and this helps indie creators reach a wider audience, but YouTube claims that indie and online creators are also reshaping the entertainment industry.
Animation's New Wave, YouTube Culture & Trends Report, says that a staggering 61% of fans aged 14- 24 enjoy watching indie animated series on YouTube "as much or more than series created by a major studio."
"At a time when the traditional media landscape is dominated by preexisting IP, independent online animators are proving the exception, creating original characters and stories with engaged fan communities and showing what it takes to be successful in entertainment today," says the report.
To find these results, the YouTube Culture & Trends Report team did research about animation trends around the world, interviewing prominent creators, doing surveys with SmithGieger, and asking people aged 14-49 who are active online how they engage with animated videos.
According to the report, The Amazing Digital Circus and Alien Stage are two of the most popular YouTube animated series. The Amazing Digital Circus was created by American animator Gooseworx and produced by Glitch Productions, which is a studio based in Australia.
Alien Stage was created by Korean creators, Vivinos and Qmeng. And that's another thing about this: animators from any part of the world can get a lot of views this way, but revenue isn't often as straightforward.
Another thing YouTube Culture & Trends noticed is that the animations usually fall into three categories:
Animators can also take advantage of the YouTube tools, such as dubbing and auto-translation, which allow fans to watch shows from different parts of the world. The study is very detailed about how animation is changing and becoming more accessible to everyone.
Fans not only have the chance of watching shows in other languages, but they also have the opportunity of interacting with the creators, making the experience more friendly and intimate.
