Alien: Isolation 2 Draws on Ridley Scott's Original 1979 Movie

Creative Director Al Hope and Project Art Director Ana Sopikova discuss the team's inspiration, the Xenomorph, and the new protagonist.

If you are a fan of the original Alien movies, you might enjoy the upcoming Alien: Isolation 2, as the developers largely draw on Ridley Scott's 1979 film.

Creative Director Al Hope and Project Art Director Ana Sopikova spoke with IGN at the Lucca Comics and Games Festival and discussed the team's inspiration, the Xenomorph that will appear in the game, and the new character.

Hope said that the team defined the survival horror genre from the start and had no urge to change it, as the movies did when they became more action-focused. Sopikova added that the developers stay true to the 1979 film. In the sequel, players will meet the same creature as in the first game, but it has now landed on a new planet. According to the developers, it will be "quite similar" to what players have seen before, but enhanced with technology.

Sopikova also noted that the team has a close relationship with 20th Century Studios and draws on authentic images from the movie's production:

"We are really staying true to Ridley Scott’s original 1979 film, and we have a really good close relationship with 20th Century [Studios]. We have an archive with just loads of behind-the-scenes photos from the set, just really close-up images that really allow the team to just go deep in there and study and look at the types of materials they used at the time and look at the types of methods that they were using for building this costume."

Hope mentioned that players will take on the role of a new character. Introducing a new protagonist felt like a "natural choice," as the team wanted to tell a new story. According to Hope, the character has a different perspective: she works for the company and has not encountered the creature before.

Recently, the developers at Creative Assembly answered fan questions in a Q&A session, revealing that the game will also feature a photo mode with filters inspired by the original movie, alongside a physical edition and gameplay improvements.
