Amazing Custom Terrain Tool Made with Godot
The tool by Jan Fidler, created for his RTS game, adds rivers, rocks, and woods to a scene in a split second.
Game Developer Jan Fidler showcased his custom terrain tool that adds diverse landscape relief in seconds. The result is an amazing stylized scene in a hand-painted graphic style with a river, rocks, and a forest. As explained by the developer, models were made in Blender and textures were completed in Substance 3D Designer, while shaders and terrain were handled in Godot.
Fidler shared that he used a tutorial on making a custom tool plugin from Octodemy as a base for creating a custom window. The developer made a custom class, which reads textures, sends them to the shader, and updates the collider. The creator explained that the terrain editor modifies these textures around the mouse position and tells the Terrain object after each modification to update the shader. As for trees and grass, they are generated by a component under the Terrain node every time a "refresh" event is called.
The developer crafted the tool for his upcoming RTS game titled By Sword & Road. The game is a minimalistic strategy focused on setting up military logistics, where players can conquer their enemies by cutting off their supply lines, and features an original story campaign and challenges.
