Artist Motion-Captures a Dog, and It Looks Like an Alien

Thankfully, the real dog is fine.

Artist Max, known on Reddit as I hate max, showcased an animation that uses a mocap of their dog made with DeepLabCut, an open-source software toolbox for markerless 2D and 3D pose estimation of animals and objects.

While some of the motions might remotely make you think of a dog, the whole setup looks very weird and even unsettling. In the comments, Max shared two behind-the-scenes videos, showing the rig behind the animation, which looks incomplete, and real-life footage used as a base, where we finally see a dog whose motion was captured – and thankfully, everything is fine with the pet.

Recreating animals' behavior in on the screen is a hard task. To learn more about it, check out our interview with Brett Ineson from Animatrik Film Design, who talked about the mocap solutions for film and games, including horse mocaps, and have a look at how the DIGIC team brought gracious and playful cat motions to 3D using high-end photoscanning and motion capture technologies:

Also, take a look at Blender animations of stylized animals – 3D Artist Vossadova didn't have to recreate lifelike movements for their low-poly little characters, but definitely added bright personality to the furry characters, like in this recreation of a cute meme with a kitten drinking milk, a fall scene with a chameleon, and a scene with a cat's nighttime antics featuring an unexpected ending:

For a closer look at the 3D main tools, check out our guide to 3D modeling software, which outlines what each program offers, what it costs, and where it falls short.
