It's not easy, Tommaso Maurutto knows it.
Sailing might look like a chill hobby in movies, but it's nothing like that when the sea plays against you. Tommaso Maurutto tried to show this experience realistically in his animation.
"My goal with this shot was to let viewers experience what sailing feels like. I had a lot of fun including all the little details and making sure his interactions with the boat were accurate."
The modeling, shading, lighting, texturing, and rendering were done in Blender, while Maya was used for rigging and animation.
"A lot of the stuff shown here took some trial and error, especially experimenting with new techniques to animate the splashes. I ended up using a remeshed particle simulation as a base to draw the splashes with Grease Pencil. I spent quite a bit of time figuring out how to render the water but then I came across the Physical Open Water addon (from the short film "Flow"), which helped a lot in extending the ocean while keeping things relatively fast. I shrinkwrapped it to the base ocean animation I had already done with the Ocean modifier, to animate the boat in Maya."
