Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Sets Franchise Steam Player Record, Sells 2 Million Copies

The long-awaited remake has already sold over 2 million copies, set a new Steam record for the Assassin's Creed franchise, and earned strong critical and player reception just days after launch.

More than a decade after Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag first introduced players to Edward Kenway's pirate adventure, Ubisoft appears to have struck gold once again.

Just one day after launch, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has become the biggest Steam launch in the history of the franchise, surpassing 99,000 concurrent players and overtaking previous record holders such as Assassin's Creed Shadows and Assassin's Creed Odyssey. That easily surpasses the mid-60,000 numbers put up by the previous top entries.

The remake has also crossed 2 million copies sold, giving Ubisoft another major commercial success following the strong performance of Assassin's Creed Shadows. Combined with an 84 Metacritic score and a "Mostly Positive" user rating on Steam after the first 3,500 reviews. The early response suggests that revisiting one of the series' most beloved entries has resonated with both longtime fans and newcomers.

It's also especially notable because, typically, any major performance issues would cause user sentiment to decline rapidly, which means optimization efforts have worked out well.

The original Black Flag has often been regarded as one of the franchise's defining entries thanks to its combination of open-world exploration, naval combat, and the charismatic journey of pirate-turned-Assassin Edward Kenway. Rather than radically reinventing that formula, Resynced focuses on modernizing the experience while preserving the core adventure.

Built using the latest version of Ubisoft's Anvil Engine, the same technology behind Assassin's Creed Shadows, the remake introduces fully rebuilt environments, modern rendering techniques, seamless streaming between land and sea, improved AI, updated combat systems, dynamic weather, expanded ship customization, recruitable officers, additional story content, and quality-of-life improvements, including manual crouching and redesigned stealth encounters.
