Autodesk has announced the discontinuation of Mudbox, a 3D digital painting and sculpting software for artists working in cinematics, TV, and game development, meaning that sales of new and renewals of existing subscriptions will end in 2026.

Sales of three-year new and renewal Mudbox subscriptions end on August 7, and sales of one-year and monthly new and renewal subscriptions end on November 7, with Mudbox removed from Autodesk Flex starting that date. The company notes that owners of an Autodesk Media & Entertainment Collection 2027 subscription will continue to have access to Mudbox. The 2027 version of the Media & Entertainment Collection will be the last to include Mudbox.

To ease the transition, Autodesk will give existing subscribers a free 5-year standalone Mudbox 2027 license, provided their subscription is still active on August 7. Customers with multiple active subscriptions will get one free license for each, with all of them expected to arrive by the end of August.

The reason behind the decision is the absence of significant feature enhancements since Mudbox 2019. For example, the 2026 Mudbox release didn't include major updates, with no new features mentioned in the release notes.

Mudbox is intended for creating realistic and stylized characters and environments, allowing for sculpting highly detailed models and painting stunning textures. The software is used by professional VFX and game studios like Wētā FX and was utilized in the production of the 2005 film King Kong, directed by Peter Jackson.
