Vince Zampella has some strong memories of the time.
Activision
Vince Zampella has influenced several important titles, including Call of Duty, Apex Legends, and the recently released Battlefield 6. His journey was not simple, and EA was one of the stones in his path, but without it, Call of Duty wouldn't have happened.
Back at the beginning of the 2000s, Zampella was a lead designer of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, published by EA. The game was a success, but he had a dispute with EA and left to co-found Infinity Ward.
In 2009, Activision gave the studio creative control over the Call of Duty franchise. However, it wanted both founders, Zampella and Jason West, gone. Later, they were fired for alleged "insubordination."
West and Zampella then founded Respawn, which was acquired by Electronic Arts, and Zampella was put in charge of the Battlefield franchise.
In an interview with GQ, Zampella shared that "the only reason that Call of Duty exists is because EA were d*cks."
He didn't elaborate, but it's interesting how hate and spite produced one of the most popular shooters in the world.
Now, Zampella has another hit in his portfolio: Battlefield 6 showed the strongest launch in the series' history, with 747,440 concurrent players on Steam on the first weekend, despite most people working on the game having never developed the series.
