Baya: Blender to Maya Source File Converter

Peter Gubin released a cool new plugin.

Environment artist Peter Gubin has recently released Baya: a new Blender add-on that lets users export models in Maya’s native .ma format. The plugin makes it easier to exchange assets and streamlines workflow for the users of Maya-oriented game engine exporters.

Basically, Baya allows you to export assets from Blender in .ma (Maya ASCII) format, so you don't have to use another format like FBX.

The tool also lets you connect a bridge between Maya and Blender, but you still have to refresh the Maya scene to check out updates. It’s a one-click process though.

The new add-on supports polygonal geometry, exports shading information including soft edges and custom vertex normals.

The developer also plans to add a number of features:

  • Linked collections support
  • Full material export with textures and other things
  • Maya to Blender import (import Maya source file contents into Blender)
  • Havok nodes
  • Armature transfer

You can learn more and get the tool for $14.85 here. You can also read our interview with Peter here.
