Beautiful Fuzzy 3D Moth Made for UE Short Movie
Artem Erikenov showed the behind-the-scenes work done on the character in The Cradle.
Artem Erikenov shared a look at the work he did for The Cradle, a short Unreal Engine movie by Argentum Studio, inspired by Zdzisław Beksiński, a Polish painter and photographer, whose surreal works you can see through The Cradle's environments.
He created hair, fur, and simulations, resulting in the gorgeous moth above. He also made face and body textures for the main character.
"The Cradle is our take on bringing Beksiński-inspired visuals into 3D. We created a dry, decaying world where time feels distorted and reality slowly breaks apart. The project focuses on mood, scale, and presence — less about explaining the world, more about letting you feel it. At the center is Diana, a fragile figure moving through massive, abstract structures. Around her, glowing moths guide lost bodies deeper into the space, pulled by a distant, almost physical sound."
Erikenov showed some tear and water simulations as well as clothes disintegration tests in Houdini. The groom for the moth was done in Ornatrix and transferred to Houdini for tuning of the animation. The hair and dynamic simulation for the protagonist were created in Houdini, with texturing done in Substance 3D Painter.
Erikenov is a master of his craft, as you can see in his other grooms on ArtStation.
