Blender 2025 Projects: Current Progress Snapshot

We're halfway through Q2, let's check things out.

Early in 2025, the Blender Foundation revealed its plans for the year, including dates for the upcoming major releases and highlighting several projects as key targets. Blender 4.4 launched successfully in March, and the developers have now given an update on each project's status.

With the upcoming Blender 4.5 LTS, Vulkan backend support is now official, matching OpenGL in both features and performance. Moving forward, developers will monitor bug reports and plan to switch Vulkan to the default backend on all platforms except macOS.

The UV Sync design task is in an Almost Complete status, with the remaining work focused on finalizing the port of certain selection operators and fixing minor issues. The Compositor is moving closer to feature parity with Shading and Geometry Nodes through better integration across node trees, and the next step is to expose most of the existing node options as socket inputs.

Hair Dynamics, Project Setup, Shape Keys Improvements, and Remote Asset Libraries are all marked as In Progress. Texture Cache & Mipmaps, NPR, and Story Tools are currently at the Design/Prototype stage.

Since the team is concentrating on the 5.0 breaking changes and performance concerns, work on Layered Sculpting and Dynamic Overrides is still pending.
