Rohail Asghar, a Student and Shader Developer at The Cloud City Metaverse, has recently presented an incredible Unreal Engine 5-powered animation inspired by the renowned DVD logo scene from the US version of The Office.
Using the engine's Material Editor, the author has managed to produce an accurate recreation of the logo bouncing from side to side, even hitting a corner once, noting that the desired result was achieved by writing a "little shader script that creates a zig-zag wave" and using it to "offset the texture coordinates". You can check out the full animation attached above or by visiting Rohail's LinkedIn page.
And here's the scene the project was inspired by:
For those unaware, UE5's Material Editor is a node-based graph interface that enables you to create shaders that can be applied to your geometry, such as Static and Skeletal Meshes, or with other systems, such as Cascade.
By connecting nodes in Material Editor, you can create complex material networks that control attributes such as Color, Roughness, Metallic properties, Normal Maps, and Transparency, allowing you to simulate a wide range of materials and shaders.
Material Editor also offers a real-time preview of the materials, enabling you to see the changes you make immediately and letting you iterate and fine-tune the appearance of materials until you achieve the desired visual result.
Attached below are a couple of comprehensive tutorials that will help you get started with Material Editor:
