Breakdown: Creating KPop Demon Hunters' Airplane Sequence

The film is now available in a director-approved 4K UHD edition from Criterion.

Produced by Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters quickly became a worldwide hit, winning awards, topping music charts, and capturing audiences with its amazing animation, memorable characters, and catchy songs. It's definitely not a film you'll forget anytime soon, and now fans can enjoy it in a director-approved 4K UHD edition featuring a Dolby Atmos soundtrack from Criterion.

As part of Criterion's new 4K release, you can also check out a special feature breaking down the film's opening scene, created by Taylor Ramos and Tony Zhou, the duo behind Every Frame a Painting. The airplane sequence plays an important role in the film, introducing the whole idea of K-pop stars who are also demon hunters and love to eat. In this video, key members of the crew break down how the sequence came together, from the first draft to the final mix.

Here's what else you can expect from the director-approved 4K UHD + Blu-ray Special Edition of KPop Demon Hunters:

  • A full feature-length animatic, with a new introduction by Kang and Appelhans
  • A new making-of documentary
  • An additional visual essay by Taylor Ramos & Tony Zhou on the film’s use of music
  • Lyric videos for seven of the songs in the film, including How It's Done
  • Collectible postcards featuring original illustrations by artists who worked on the film
  • A new cover by Ami Thompson
