Capcom Reveals Plans To Evolve RE Engine With AI Features
The goal of project REX is to "create games together with AI".
Capcom
Last week, Capcom, the company behind popular franchises like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter, held its own tech conference, Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026. During the event, programmer Satoshi Ishida presented some big changes coming to Capcom's in-house game engine, the RE Engine.
Ishida highlighted three major challenges the company currently faces in game development: first, games have become so large in data that many simple tasks can take a long time, and second, as development teams grow, Capcom needs an engine that's easy for everyone to use. Finally, he said, "Successfully integrating AI technology into development workflows has become an essential condition for streamlining future development."
Codenamed REX, Capcom's new initiative to improve the engine will add AI-assisted tools, and at least some of them will be open-source for AI training. It's difficult to know how far Capcom's plans will go when it comes to generating art and assets: earlier this year, the company emphasized it won't use generative AI assets in games. Based on GameBiz's report, REX seems to be focused on improving development efficiency, tools, and quality assurance.

"Ishida commented that these technological advancements will ultimately lead to the larger goal of evolving into an 'AI-generation game engine.'
The REX project unified the entire system using the rules of the world's most common programming language. This offers a significant advantage, not only in terms of ease of use for human developers but also in terms of readability and comprehension for AI. With a unified base language, in the future, AI will be able to understand and automatically create programs, and even perform test plays to automatically check for bugs." (machine-translated)
