Andrzej Sapkowski says he hasn't contributed to the development of The Witcher 4.
Out of 160 video game franchises based on books, one would probably struggle to find one more popular and better regarded than CD Projekt Red's The Witcher, adapted from Andrzej Sapkowski's eponymous novel series.
And, as with nearly any long-running adaptation, the question on the minds of many is whether the original author and those in charge of the adaptation stay in close contact after all these years to ensure that new installments not only stand on their own but also remain true to the source material – expanding the original's lore rather than rewriting it.
Apparently, in the case of The Witcher, said contact has now dwindled, with Sapkowski revealing that CDPR – currently developing The Witcher 4 – rarely seeks his creative advice anymore.
CDPR
Speaking at a book event promoting his new work (via GamesRadar+), the author said that while CDPR used to consult him from time to time for advice and additional information about his world during the development of previous games, it has now become "rare" for the studio to ask for his input.
He further noted that he hasn't contributed to The Witcher 4's production, and since the upcoming game's story unfolds after the events of the books, it suggests that, whatever story and character writing the new installment features, it will be 100% authored by CDPR.
While some might assume there's bad blood between the studio and the writer, Sapkowski insists that it's not the case, stating that "the contracts" between him and CDPR are "excellent," though it's unclear whether he was referring to their overall relationship or the compensation he continues to receive from the success of The Witcher game franchise.
"The contracts between me and the game people are excellent right now," Sapkowski commented. "Let's hope it stays that way."
Speaking of The Witcher – which, for better or for worse, has two major adaptations – Netflix's TV series recently released its fourth season, debuting with a poor 20% Rotten Tomatoes score, as viewers criticized it for weak writing and questionable casting choices, most notably the replacement of Henry Cavill with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia.
So, what do you think about CDPR developing The Witcher 4 without consulting the original author? Will the studio manage to avoid the mistakes of Netflix's fourth chapter? Tell us what you think down in the comments!
