CD Projekt Red Wraps Up Cyberpunk 2077 & Shifts Focus to The Witcher 4

For the first time in over a decade, no one in the studio is currently assigned to Cyberpunk 2077.

CD Projekt Red's latest financial results reveal that, currently, no developer at the studio is working on Cyberpunk 2077.

The studio provides a breakdown of employees assigned to each of its projects in each financial presentation. As of February 29, 2024, 17 employees were working on Cyberpunk 2077. However, the most recent report shows none.

Given that Cyberpunk 2077 was first announced in 2012, and its first and only expansion, Phantom Liberty, was released in September 2023, for the first time in over a decade, no one is currently assigned to the project.

The report also reveals that a majority (407 out of 630) of CD Projekt Red's developers are now working on Polaris, the fourth entry in The Witcher series, announced in 2022. The team for Polaris expanded to 200 people by March 2023, and CDPR seems to be keeping their promise of moving The Witcher 4 into the production phase this year, as evidenced by the number of developers currently on this project.

The growing Polaris project team has sparked optimism for a potential sneak peek of the next big Witcher game soon. With The Witcher 4 being CD Projekt’s next big title following Cyberpunk 2077, it's understandable that people are comparing the progress of it to that of Cyberpunk 2077, which was finally launched eight years after it was first revealed. Piotr Karwowski, joint chief operating officer, shared his views during today’s investors call, as reported by PC Gamer:

"I would actually not look at Cyberpunk as the guidebook of how it's going to be with The Witcher specifically,” he said. Karwowski noted that CD Projekt might release "teaser trailers or informative trailers" as a precursor to the main marketing campaign. However, the full-blown marketing engine won't get into gear until there's something "actionable," like when preorders become available.

Karwowski continues to emphasize:

"I would really not necessarily look to what happened, and at which moment in time, with Cyberpunk. That's not necessarily going to match with what we're going to do here."
