CG Artist Nailed the 2D-to-3D Translation With This Atmospheric Artwork

Iolanta Prigarina faithfully recreated Alariko's digital illustration in 3D using Maya, Substance 3D, and Blender.

CG Generalist Iolanta Prigarina has recently dabbled into 3D environment art, presenting what has to be one of the most faithful 2D-to-3D recreations you've ever seen.

Using a combination of Maya, Blender, Substance 3D Painter, and DaVinci Resolve, the artist closely remade Alariko's Cloudy Day illustration, nailing the stylization of the objects and shaders and the scene's overall hand-painted look. According to Iolanta, the project's goal was to enhance her modeling and look development skills and replicate the original concept's likeness as accurately as possible.

"I had such a blast translating Alariko's rich little seaside town in 3D, and loved playing around with various simulation, animation, and texturing methods to make it look all nice and buzzing with life," commented the creator. "Nailing the art style also involved some tricky modeling, projection, and hand-painting techniques."

And here's the original concept made by Alariko, see if you can find any differences between the 2D and 3D versions:
