Check Out Doom Running Inside Balatro

An endless list of things that can run Doom now has one more item.

What is common between living cells, Blender's Geometry Nodes, Windows' Notepad, LEGO bricks, and nearly any device humanity has invented? The answer is that they all can run Doom, a legendary 1993 first-person shooter that has literally become omnipresent.

A Reddit user known under the name of UwUDev recently posted a short video, in which Doom is run on playing cards inside a roguelike poker-inspired deck-builder, Balatro. The cards were turned into pieces of screen, transmitting the Doom gameplay. Even when the cards are swapped, Doom is still on! "Literally nobody asked for it, but here it is, Doom on Balatro," wrote UwUDev. "Everyone has been asking for this," reads the most popular comment as of now.

Although LocalThunk, Balatro's creator, didn't specifically ask for it, he certainly was delighted to see the project, as evident from the developer's recent tweet:

UwUDev explained that the technology behind streaming the Doom gameplay onto the cards inside Balatro is based on the idea of another modder known under the name Milky, who managed to play Bad Apple on a sprite sheet. The author also noted that the existing version of the Doom inside Balatro is "super laggy" and shared the potential plans to optimize it as now it is "really unplayable".

Speaking of Bad Apple, it has also been implemented in Balatro. A GitHub user known as jamesthejellyfish posted a BadAppleBalatro mod a few months ago, allowing to play full video inside the card game.

Trying to bring Doom to various devices has in fact become an entertaining challenge for gaming and programming enthusiasts. Implementing this game inside other games has also been a part of this trend, for example, Doom has already been brought to Fortnite.
