Check Out Microsoft's First New Copilot Key for Windows Keyboards

It's a big change to Windows keyboards in almost 30 years.

In the latest blog post, Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer at Microsoft, announced the introduction of a new key for Windows keyboards this year. This change in the Windows keyboard layout is the first major update since the Windows key was introduced in 1994.

"Nearly 30 years ago, we introduced the Windows key to the PC keyboard that enabled people all over the world to interact with Windows. We see this as another transformative moment in our journey with Windows where Copilot will be the entry point into the world of AI on the PC," stated Mehdi.

Microsoft's new Copilot key will replace the old application key that has been around for decades. It will be next to the right-side alt key on most keyboards, though the exact placement may vary depending on the manufacturer and market.

Clicking the Copilot key will activate Microsoft Copilot, an AI chatbot integrated into Windows 11, as well as Microsoft's web browsers Bing and Edge. This chatbot, similar to Bard and ChatGPT, allows users to ask questions and receive responses.

Mehdi hasn't disclosed the specific OEMs that will incorporate the Copilot key into their keyboards. Further details regarding this may be revealed during next week's Consumer Electronics Show and other upcoming announcements.
