Check Out Rex Nobilis, a Bullet Hell Game Running on Stock SNES
Time to blow off the dust of your SNES.
The developer of Rex Nobilis, an upcoming SNES bullet hell game, has shared new footage showcasing a work-in-progress boss pattern. The clip shows the player's ship strategically maneuvering to avoid spinning lasers while the screen is almost entirely filled with enemy projectiles.
The 25-second footage had me holding my breath throughout. It undoubtedly requires high levels of strategy and, of course, a good memory to remember the intricate bullet patterns to survive.
In response to concerns about the SNES's limited CPU and its struggles with multiple sprites, and the use of SA-1 and SDD-1 chips to enhance speed and data capacity, the developer proudly stated that he's creating the game on an unmodified SNES. He's using an efficient collision engine he developed to manage numerous sprites, creating complex effects such as beams by linking multiple sprites together.
