Artist Maksim Bolotov showed the work behind the iconic character.
Digital sculptor Maksim Bolotov recreated Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek as a stunning realistic 3D portrait made with ZBrush, Marvelous Designer, and Arnold.
Bolotov has a lot of anatomy study projects on his ArtStation, which helped him achieve this amazing likeness.
He also has some tips for those struggling with it:
- Always start from the silhouette, the sphere is in priority, because you have more space for form manipulation.
- Don’t use the See-Through mode as much as you can.
- ZBrush's camera is a little bit off, so it’s better to check the likeness on the render.
- Correct lighting and different shader materials really help to understand the forms.
- Small details are very important. Lots of artists don’t pay attention to the ears.
- Before going to bed, you can check your work progress on different gadgets like your phone or tablet and find more fields to improve.
"Also, the paradox is – to achieve likeness, you need to not focus on it; focus on anatomy and forms."
