Giovanni Manili's WIP setup now features a sticky lips effect.
Giovanni Manili, a Senior Asset Artist at Floating Rock Studio, continues working on his WIP 3D facial rig, showcasing a new addition that pushes realism to the next level. In development for over six months, the setup features incredible attention to detail, with Giovanni regularly adding tweakable shapes for the mouth, nose, cheeks, and even the tongue, seemingly aiming to replicate the full range of motion real human faces are capable of.
The latest update, the sixth in the series, introduces a subtle and unusual yet noteworthy addition – an effect that causes the lips to slightly stick together when the character model's mouth is opened. According to Giovanni, the effect was achieved by "playing with jawOpen in-between shapes" in Maya, Autodesk's flagship 3D software the artist uses to create his rig.
