China to Block ChatGPT Services Due to Its Uncensored Replies

Regulators reportedly tell tech giants not to offer any similar tools.

While ChatGPT is getting more attention every day, Chinese regulators grow wary of it and reportedly tell tech companies not to offer its services to the public due to the chatbot's uncensored replies.

According to Nikkei Asia's sources, Tencent Holdings and Ant Group have been instructed not to offer access to ChatGPT services on their platforms. Companies will also have to report to regulators if they decide to launch their own ChatGPT-like tools.

Tencent has already suspended several third-party services that looked like they were connected to ChatGPT in any way.

China Daily claimed that the chatbot "could provide a helping hand to the U.S. government in its spread of disinformation and its manipulation of global narratives for its own geopolitical interests."

"Our understanding from the beginning is that ChatGPT can never enter China due to issues with censorship, and China will need its own versions of ChatGPT," said an executive from a leading tech company (via Nikkei Asia).

At the same time, Baidu announced that it would complete internal testing of a ChatGPT-like project "Ernie Bot" in March. It will be an embedded feature in some of the company's products rather than a chatbot though.
