Make objects move naturally with Springs as Expressions.
If you use Maya for animation, you should try Kangaroo Builder, a rigging tool that can make your workflows more flexible. Its creator, Thomas Bittner, keeps improving it, and one of them is Dynamics, which might prove very useful in your work.
In the latest version, you can create Springs as Expressions to fine-tune them more easily, "since they come with fewer and more straightforward attributes," Bittner said. "Using the old way (nHair/hairSystem) is still supported, but it's harder to get specific behavior with it."
You can deal with movement either with Springs or Dynamics, according to the Kangaroo Builder documentation, with the former used in "90% of the cases." Apply the attribute to singleBone, singleTransform, and spine (fk, fkSpline), with the latter demonstrated in the video above.

Kangaroo Builder is actively developing, so you should consider getting it if what you've seen looks like a fine deal to you. Last year, Bittner introduced a Maya to Unreal Engine's Control Rig converter and he has no plans to stop rolling out improvements.
