Creating Horror Film Sinners With Unreal Engine 5

Michael Ralla and Pepe Valencia explained how it helped them tackle some of the most challenging scenes ahead of production.

Sinners, a 1930s-set horror film rooted in Black culture, is making Academy Awards history with 16 nominations at the upcoming ceremony. Unreal Engine played a key role in the production, and Michael Ralla and Pepe Valencia recently shared how it allowed for quick iteration on complex scenes.

Sinners' highly technical sequences included a stitched IMAX-shot music montage that plays out like a single breath, as well as a large-scale train arrival designed to feel both period-accurate and cinematic. To achieve this, the team relied on a real-time visualization workflow built around Unreal Engine, using it not just for previs but as a shared creative space.
