Cyberpunk 2077: A New Look At JALI Tech For Facial Animation

A new video from CD Projekt RED features a behind-the-scenes look at one of the game's technologies.

We've recently published an article about one of the technologies used for the production of Cyberpunk 2077. The tech is called JALI, and it's a machine-learning-based software for automated facial animation.

Sebastian Kalemba has previously noted that doing facial motion capture for all NPCs is obviously impossible. "You have to remember that we're talking about recording massive amounts of lines with numerous actors across different localizations, cooperating with studios all over the world for sessions, and doing VO pickups all the way until the very last moments sometimes. Using JALI we're able to successfully overcome many difficulties, for example, logistical ones, that this undertaking would otherwise pose with regular facial motion capture," the developer said.

The new video shares a fresh behind-the-scenes look at the technology and shows how it helped them streamline production.
