Cyberpunk 2077 Somehow Looks Even More Realistic with This Retro VHS Aesthetic Mod
The grainy VHS aesthetic is a perfect complement to the grungy mood that already pervades Cyberpunk 2077.
Tulired created TapePunk, a mod that emulates the VHS aesthetic in Cyberpunk 2077, and somehow, makes the game look even more realistic.
"It provides a gritty, analog-inspired look for Cyberpunk 2077, avoiding over-the-top effects. A simple tool for those seeking a cinematic, nostalgic atmosphere based on real-world media study and our memories," according to Tulired.
He also said that they spent countless hours learning about VHS and camcorders, watching videos, and getting feedback from others to create this mod.
On Reddit, people talked about an incredible thing about the human brain, and that is our ability to fill gaps. Being able to make connections between things we already know.
Another person said, "I think it's because the less detailed video format hides imperfections. It's a lot harder to notice low-res textures and be taken out of the experience when even everything has a VHS filter over it, and things like these textures are effectively hidden."
Tulired explained that he got interested in how VHS functions, why it looks the way it does, and why we remember it the way we do. What he didn't expect was the sentiment so many people got from watching it.
Someone said, "I can't explain it, but this is what nostalgia feels like," and Tulired added that, at this moment, that's the purpose of the project, an idealized version, like a memory, and as someone who grew up in the 2000s, even for me, it feels nostalgic, and it reminds me of my childhood.
Tulired compared the experience to playing backroom games and added that the effect could cause motion sickness to some people. At the moment, the mod is in a more 80s and 90s style, but they would like to add 70s and 00s presets.
