Dead by Daylight Developer Buys Darkest Dungeon, Closes Midwinter

No Dead by Daylight spin-off.

Red Hook Studios

Behaviour Interactive, the company best known for Dead by Daylight, has acquired Red Hook Studios, the developer of Darkest Dungeon.

This should reinforce Behaviour’s "leading position in horror gaming" and "reduce risk" for the company amid its "strategy shift," while Red Hook gains "stability" from the deal, according to Game Developer.

"Darkest Dungeon has long been a series we’ve admired, enjoyed (and maybe even lost a little sleep over) as fans, and the opportunity to welcome Red Hook as a fully independent studio under the Behaviour banner is nothing short of a thrill. We look forward to supporting Red Hook as they continue to do what they do best: put your sanity to the test," Behaviour said on X/Twitter.

The company has also shut down Midwinter Entertainment and canceled Project T, a Dead by Daylight spin-off the studio was working on. "This decision was taken following a diligent risk assessment from a commercial and a product perspective, which yielded unsatisfactory results. This sad news in no way reflects the talent of the team, who put a lot of energy into Project T," said Behaviour’s spokesperson.

The employees were offered to relocate to its Canadian studios. If they don't accept, they will be given a "generous" severance package. "We want to thank them for all their hard work on Project T and wish them the very best for the future," said the spokesperson.

The cancelation comes as a surprise for some workers as "one of the crazy things is that in the most recent playtest we got a 92/100 score in fun and playability – and it is being sold that the game was not liked by the players," according to one of the developers.

So, there will be no Dead by Daylight spin-off for now, apart from Behaviour’s collaboration with Supermassive Games on The Casting of Frank Stone, which is more of a typical Supermassive horror set in the DBD universe.

You can ask Red Hook's co-founders, Chris Bourassa and Tyler Sigman, some questions via Discord on September 25 at 10:30 am PT.
