Despite Saber Interactive CEO's Pro-AI Course, Space Marine 3 is GenAI-Free
While Matthew Karch is proudly embracing the use of AI in Saber's pipeline, the studio's CCO confirmed that there is no genAI in Space Marine 3.
After the Rideshare Simulator AI controversy, the community was left disappointed. The lead writer on Rideshare Simulator, Stella Sacco, claimed she was replaced by AI while working on the project. Saber CEO Matt Karch called it a publicity stunt and said that Stella had been removed from the project three years prior. "I would be happy to engage in a reasonable conversation about how AI can and should help shape gamer experiences," he stated later.
After that, Warhammer 40,000 players began actively discussing the fate of the upcoming title – Space Marine 3 – suggesting that it might be affected by the studio's shift towards AI as well. Most of them still believed Space Marine 3 would not be a genAI playground for Saber – and they were right.
In an interview with IGN, Saber CCO Tim Willits explained that, so far, Rideshare Simulator is the team's only project where AI is being used to test out how it goes. The studio's most highly anticipated titles, including Hellraiser, Jurassic Park, Space Marine 3, and others, will stay untouched by genAI.
"There is absolutely no generative AI in Space Marine 3 or Hellraiser or Stuntman or Turok or Jurassic Park, or Wick," Willits said. "But like we said, we’re going to experiment with it. Try it out in Rideshare, see if it works. See if people like it. If they don’t like it, we’re like, 'All right.'"
As Tim Willits clarified, Rideshare Simulator is the type of game the team considered "appropriate" for this type of experimentation.
He added that game developers are still figuring out how to use AI to their advantage, and the Saber Interactive team is no exception. Tim Willits thinks no one really has it completely sorted out, which is why the developers are still experimenting with it, trying to see where genAI can take them.
"And then players, they don't really know what to do with it. So I do believe this is going to happen. Somebody – I don't know who – somebody will come up with a game that is so freaking cool that it will change everyone's opinion and it'll be like, ‘Oh, that's it.’ And then things will settle," he commented.
With Space Marine 3, the situation is entirely different, as Warhammer 40,000 has grown a devoted fan base over the years, and after the massive success of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, users expect no less from the sequel.
Moreover, the developer of the original Warhammer game and its owner, Games Workshop Group PLC, has a strict internal anti-genAI policy. This goes for both the products themselves and their advertising. Saber Interactive CEO Matt Karch, on the other hand, is famously pro-AI. The studio, however, is still feeling out the use of generative AI in their titles, leaving the biggest ones untouched.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 is still in development, with the release date far from being set. The title was announced in March 2025, and the developer stated that the new installment in the series would feature "an immersive campaign, a multiplayer mode, and large-scale battles."
