Destiny 2's Distortion VFX Recreated In Blender
Approved by the original Bungie's VFX Artist.
3D Artist Delta shared their version of the sky hole effect used for Distortions, a new enhancement added to Patrol mode with Monument of Triumph. The recreation looks fantastic, though Delta noted that it isn't a perfect match to the original.
Artem Sorokin, the original VFX Artist at Bungie who created the effect, actually saw the post and commented that he liked it. Talking about how it was made, Sorokin said, "The exterior is perfection, as for the interior, I used a virtual skybox created via view normal blended with a pole cap (to hide pinch) with UVs derived from X and Y view coordinate gradients offset by .5 to create a 'flat' UV at Z, and the Z coordinate for mask."
This isn't Delta's first attempt at recreating VFX from Destiny 2: we previously featured their computer terminal and portal:
Artem Sorokin has worked on a number of visual effects for Destiny 2 and has shared many of these projects on his ArtStation. We highly recommend checking out his work.
On June 9, Bungie released the final live-service content update for Destiny 2, marking the end of the game's active development cycle. Although the game will remain online and playable, no further updates are planned.
