Bungie Ends Its Destiny Era and Cancels All Future Content Plans

Bungie has confirmed that Destiny 2’s final major update will arrive in June, effectively ending the game’s long-running live content pipeline as the studio shifts focus toward new projects. Destiny 2 will go into maintenance mode.

This felt all but inevitable in the age of live service games, but I'd be lying if I didn't say part of me felt like maybe new content in Destiny 2 really would last forever. But that's not the case.

After nearly a decade of expansions, seasonal content, raids, and live-service evolution, Bungie has officially confirmed the end of Destiny's major content roadmap. That includes sequels, expansions, and new content updates as it switches into maintenance mode.

"As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio.

Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to.

We're proud of Destiny 2, the places it took us, and the legacy it has created. Because of you all, our universe is vast, built on years of shared stories, adventures, and victories. From the Cosmodrome to the Pale Heart to the Lawless Frontier, we have forged life-long memories and friendships with you all."

- Bungie's Official Statement

While Destiny 2 will remain online and playable, Bungie stated that the game’s active development cycle is effectively concluding. The studio also indicated that its regular cadence of “This Week in Destiny” updates and ongoing content support will significantly slow down following the final release.

Originally launched in 2017 following the success of the original Destiny in 2014, Destiny 2 evolved through multiple business model shifts, expansions, seasonal structures, and technical overhauls across nearly ten years of operation.

The decision also arrives during an especially turbulent period for Bungie. Since Sony acquired the studio for $3.6 billion in 2022, Bungie has faced multiple rounds of layoffs, project restructuring, delays, and growing pressure surrounding both Destiny 2 and Marathon. Their latest financial results didn't paint an encouraging picture, either.

At the same time, Sony itself has significantly scaled back its broader live-service ambitions over the past two years following multiple project cancellations and underperforming releases across the industry.

Although Destiny 2 technically continued beyond 2024’s critically acclaimed Destiny 2: The Final Shape expansion, many players increasingly viewed that release as the franchise’s natural narrative conclusion.

For now, the majority of Bungie's attention shifts to Marathon and whatever the studio has cooking next.
