Destiny Is Having a Hard Time Bringing in New Players, Bungie Says

"This presents problems for a game that you're trying to maintain as a live service."

Much like Marathon and Bungie itself, Destiny 2 has seemingly been going through some tough times as of late. According to Game Director Tyson Green, the game is now struggling to attract new players, with the vast majority of its playerbase made up of veterans – something Green says is problematic for a live-service title.

"For years now, Destiny has been on this steady hardening of the core [audience]," the director explained in an interview with IGN. "More and more core players are staying and playing the game, but relatively few [new] people come into the game. There's a tightening and contraction, and this presents problems for a game that you're trying to maintain as a live service, especially when you want to keep serving those core players with great, compelling expansions."

Speaking of Destiny 2's playerbase, after the release of The Edge of Fate expansion in July, when the game peaked at over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam, numbers steadily declined, barely topping 20K even at weekend peaks.

The figure alone doesn't say much, but it becomes more telling when compared to another live-service multiplayer shooter whose playerbase has pretty much solidified at this point and new players are few and far between – Team Fortress 2 – which still regularly surpasses 40K players daily and 75K on weekends, despite being a decade older than Destiny 2 and essentially abandoned by its creator.
