Sony's Q4 FY25 Financial Report Shows It Selling 1.5 Million PlayStation 5 Units & Losing $767 Million over Bungie

The PlayStation 6 release is not clear due to memory issues.

Bungie

Sony released a financial report for Q4 FY2025, which ended on March 31, 2026, showing its record operating profit in the Game & Network Services segment (PlayStation, PSN, and Bungie). Sales here are essentially the same at ¥4,685.7 billion (about $29.9 billion), but operating income climbed to ¥463.3 billion (about $2.96 billion), up 12% year-on-year.

Sony acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2000, but it doesn't seem to be doing that well: last year, the tech giant gained tighter control over the game developer, which lost ¥31.5 billion yen (roughly $204 million at the time), as recorded in November. Alas, the new document states that the impairment loss is now ¥120.1 billion (about $767 million). Moreover, Sony added ¥18.3 billion ($117 million) to that number, correcting previously capitalized Bungie development costs.

Moving on to brighter news for Sony, Monthly Active Users in March hit 125 million accounts, up 1% year-on-year, with total play time in Q4 also rising 1%.

Sony sold 1.5 million PS5 units in Q4 and 16 million in FY2025, making the total number 93.7 million worldwide.

Next year, Sony expects sales to decline 6% due to a decrease in hardware purchases because of the continuing memory shortage, but operating income will jump 30%, according to the forecast, thanks to "an increase in investments for the next-generation platform."

As for PlayStation 6, we should not expect it soon: the same problem affects the next-gen hardware.
